About our area
|
Uig is on the North West coast of Skye in the Trotternish region. Although it is a small village it has a lot to offer. The ferries for the Outer Isles leave from here, so it is a good base for touring not only the Trotternish area but also the Outer Hebrides.
The village also boasts its own brewery, with the Isle of Skye Brewery within easy walking distance of the campsite. It offers a range of beers, wines and whisky miniatures, as well as the opportunity to see brewing of Red and Black Cuillin beers in progress. That the area offers spectacular scenery goes without saying, but a few miles up the road to Kilmuir can be seen some of the best views of the sunset on Skye.
The area is also home to a rich variety of wildlife, with seabirds, songbirds, rabbits and seals within sight of the campsite. Curlews. Herons and Oystercatchers are common on the shore. Corncrakes nest in the surrounding crofts, and at times the Golden Eagle can be seen hunting over the hillside behind the campsite. The Trotternish summits have a unique alpine flora, and the village of Uig is ablaze with wild flowers all summer, including many orchids.
The village also has a pottery and gift shop. For the more adventurous (and energetic) there is also a nearby pony trekking centre. The pier offers good opportunities for fishing. To recover from all that you could just sit and admire the scenery or take a leisurely cruise on one of the Caledonian MacBrayne ferries.
