What to see and do in and around Uig

About our area

Uig is on the North West coast of Skye in the Trotternish region.  Although it is a small village it has a lot to offer.  The ferries for the Outer Isles leave from here, so it is a good base for touring not only the Trotternish area but also the Outer Hebrides.

The Quiraing, Trotternish, Isle of SkyeThere are a great many good walks in the area, ranging from a gentle stroll in the Rha woods to a strenuous two-day hike along the Trotternish Ridge.  A hill road from Uig crosses the Ridge close to the Quiraing where many of the Ridge's most spectacular rock formations are to be found.  Another attractive walk from Uig takes you through the remarkable landscape of the Fairy Glen.

The village also boasts its own brewery, with the Isle of Skye Brewery within easy walking distance of the campsite.  It offers a range of beers, wines and whisky miniatures, as well as the opportunity to see brewing of Red and Black Cuillin beers in progress.

That the area offers spectacular scenery goes without saying, but a few miles up the road to Kilmuir can be seen some of the best views of the sunset on Skye.

The Skye Museum of Island LifeKilmuir is also home to the Museum of Island Life, a collection of traditional homes showing the lifestyle and traditions of the early Islanders.  Flora MacDonald's grave is right next to the Museum, and a couple of miles further on the ruins of Duntulm Castle are perched precariously on a cliff-top looking out over the Minch.

The area is also home to a rich variety of wildlife, with seabirds, songbirds, rabbits and seals within sight of the campsite.  Curlews. Herons and Oystercatchers are common on the shore.  Corncrakes nest in the surrounding crofts, and at times the Golden Eagle can be seen hunting over the hillside behind the campsite.  The Trotternish summits have a unique alpine flora, and the village of Uig is ablaze with wild flowers all summer, including many orchids.

Young Heron, Uig BayThere is no need for visitors to Uig to go to the same lengths as the herons or the seals catching fish around the pier.  There are a couple of pubs in the village, with the "Pub on the Pier" within 2 minutes walk, offering a varied menu, as well as the chance to sample local draught beer.  There is also a small shop/Post Office/bakery on the way in to the village and a small shop and cafe at the local Petrol Station, which sells LPG as well as diesel and petrol.

The village also has a pottery and gift shop.  For the more adventurous (and energetic) there is also a nearby pony trekking centre.  The pier offers good opportunities for fishing.

To recover from all that you could just sit and admire the scenery or take a leisurely cruise on one of the Caledonian MacBrayne ferries.
